For this project, we had to draw something in perspective, whether it were a place or even objects going off into the distance. I had a picture of an old gas station in New Hill, NC and I loved how mysterious and whimsical it looked. It also was a really good picture perspective wise. How did I create original art? For the most part, the picture was pretty true to the photograph I used for reference. I did change some things in it, however. I made the composition a little more "zoomed in" than the original picture was. In the background of the reference pictures there was a small house, but I decided to put a few trees there instead because I really liked the way they added to the whimsical look of the drawing. I also added some texture on the building where there wasn't a lot of texture in the photograph. I really like how the texture brought the old look of the building together. How did I take risks? When we were first given this project, I was unsure of what I wanted to do. I found this picture and I fell in love with it, but I was a bit apprehensive to draw it due to the huge amount of details. I decided to challenge myself and go for it, and I learned that detail isn't as scary as it seemed at the start. Another risk I took was straying from the trusty graphite pencils. This piece is the first I have ever done with pen and ink, and I was super nervous that I'd mess up and not be able to erase my mistakes. It would have been much easier to use pencils, something I've used many times before, but I am really glad I used pen. How did I develop my art making skills? As I mentioned before, this project is the first I've ever created with pen and ink. Before Art 2, I had no idea there were so many ways to create value with pens, such as stippling, cross-hatching and even making up your own shapes to draw with. I used all of those techniques in my art and I think the result was much better than I thought it would be. The perspective drawing project helped me broaden my skills in drawing, and taught me a totally new way to create art. The first thing we learned about with shading was how to use graphite pencils with full value. Next we worked on how to draw a sphere using the whole range of values. I also drew a cylinder to get a feel for drawing and shading other shapes. Here I did some value charts using different pen and ink methods. I also began a few quick sketches of spheres using pen. This was ultimately what convinced me to use pen and ink for my perspective drawing.

SOME info for youAll of this is art from my second art class, which I took the first semester of my sophomore year in high school. This was the year that I realized, "Hey, maybe I'm actually sort of okay at this." After I took Art Two I had pretty much decided in my mind that I wanted to go further with art and explore my abilities. Archives
